The Gories, la mítica formación nacida en Detroit, vuelve a girar, y vuelve a Europa donde la noticia ha tenido una enorme repercusión. Aquella banda que conmocionó al mundo a finales de los ochenta y a la que Jack White etiquetó como “La mejor banda de garage en America desde 1960” y de la que sentenció “Ellos hicieron que la gente con Les Pauls y amplis Marshall parecieran idiotas”, vuelve a coger el mando de sus dos viejas Fenders gemelas y su básica batera para demostrarnos a los que estamos al otro lado del charco que Dan, Mick y Peg, siguen siendo un referente mundial, una banda que crea música atemporal, una banda a la que siempre hay que descubrir y referencia de los mejores.
La gira será muy intensa, comenzó el pasado viernes en Holanda en Haarlem y durará hasta el próximo 6 de Junio en España, donde cerraran sus tres última fechas en esta primera etapa, porque nos consta que ya están cerrando fechas para el Reino Unido y el norte de Europa a finales del mes de Julio y para que no perdáis detalle os recordamos las fechas en nuestro país:

Ante esta alentadora escena, no podíamos evitar intentarlo, teníamos que contactar con esta mítica banda y conseguir que ellos mismos nos contaran que los había hecho volver a hacer cruzar el charco y que podemos esperar de esta nueva excitante gira, finalmente conseguimos contactar con Danny Kroha, que amablemente y siendo tan grande tanto arriba como abajo del escenario, le agradecemos enormemente su paciencia al prestarse a contestar nuestras preguntas, esperamos que os guste.

-No se si tendréis idea del revuelo que habéis formado por aquí con vuestra nueva gira europea, en España ha sido una conmoción, un montón de fieles seguidores que nos hemos puesto como locos sabiendo que ibais a girar de nuevo... Tenéis ganas, os apetecía de veras o lo hacéis solo por la pasta como otras tantas bandas que vuelven a girar por el dinero exclusivamente?
Llevas razón, no tenía ni idea de haber creado tal revuelo! Nos gusta girar por Europa. Nos gusta estar allí, visitar muchas ciudades y creo que la hospitalidad es mejor que en U.S. Peg quería girar este verano, Mick y yo estábamos disponibles, así que nos reunimos. La banda gana dinero, así que perfecto, pero no lo hacemos solo por la pasta.
-En una antigua entrevista a Mick le preguntaban que tenían “The Gories” para crear tal atracción en el público, él respondió “El público nunca olvida que nos vieron” ¿Seguís impactando de tal manera? Qué tenéis que después de tanto tiempo, vuestro último disco oficial es “The Shaw Tapes” editado en 2013 por la Thirdman Records, pero en realidad es una grabación del 88 y el anterior es de 1992... ¿Por qué la gente sigue tan ilusionada con vosotros, que nos dais?
Nosotros damos los mejores espectáculos que podemos, poniendo todo nuestro corazón y alma en ellos. Creo que la gente esta todavía emocionada con nosotros porque nuestra música en atemporal y la gente continua para descubrirlo.
-Y que tal todo entre vosotros, ¿Tenéis una relación fluida? Dicen las malas lenguas que no os lleváis tan bien como se podría pensar...
"Las Malas Lenguas"? Que otra banda va diciendo mierda sobre nosotros! Les vamos a patear el culo!
-Una chica a la batería, dos guitarras sin bajo... Hoy en día vemos todas esas cosas, pero en vuestros inicios no era tan frecuente ¿Os consideráis unos pioneros? ¿Fue vuestra impronta en tantas bandas posteriores tan importante por toda esa revolución en el momento? ¿Cuantas veces os preguntaron porque no llevabais bajo? Y los conciertos ¿Iba mucha gente a veros entonces?
Si, en efecto, eso era inusual cuando comenzamos y si, en cierto modo creo que nosotros fuimos pioneros, pero la Velvet Underground fue una gran inspiración para nosotros, así que ellos fueron nuestros pioneros. Nos preguntaron infinidad de veces por que no llevábamos un bajo y mucha gente se ofrecía para tocar el bajo con nosotros, pero a nosotros nos gustaba como estaba, no queríamos cambiar. Al principio podría haber quizás 20 personas que venían a vernos. Nosotros tocamos por la zona de Detroit desde el '86 hasta el '91, fue demasiado tiempo para nosotros. Sobre el '91 se empezó a correr el rumor sobre nosotros y sobre unas 75 personas vendrían a vernos en directo. Eso fue algo grande para nosotros, pero para ese tiempo ya estábamos quemados...
-Las comparaciones son odiosas, pero seguro que todo esto hizo que os compararan como bandas como “The Cramps”.... ¿Halagador o Jodido?... Porque no lo tenemos tan claro.
Si, nos compararon con "The Cramps", lo cual estaba bien. No era un problema, nos gustaban, pero nosotros no eramos unos grandes seguidores de ellos. Personalmente me gustaban mucho mas John Lee Hooker y la Velvet Underground que The Cramps.
-Y después de esta gira, tenéis pensado algo? sabemos que Mick esta con “The Dirtbombs” y su nuevo proyecto con Kid Congo y Bob Bert, “Wolfmanhattan Project”, tu estas con “Danny and the Darleans” y te vemos tremendamente implicado en nuevos proyectos de “Folk-Blues”, “Delta” y temas por el estilo, lamentable a Peg le tenemos perdida la pista... ¿Habrá nuevo material de "The Gories" o nos quedaremos con la miel en los labios?
Todos vivimos en diferentes ciudades ahora. Mick en Brooklyn, Peg en New Orleans y yo aquí en Detroit. Si pudiéramos estar todos juntos como solíamos hacer, quizás un nuevo disco saldría de todo eso, pero creo que si intentáramos hacer un nuevo LP, sería solo eso, "un intento". Me gustaría que la cosa saliera natural y orgánicamente, pero no creo que eso ocurra... Y habiendo dicho eso, os cuento que Thirdman Records saca un nuevo single de grabaciones que hicimos en 2013 y que lo tendremos a la venta a lo largo de toda la gira.
-"Be Nice" / "On The Run" es el primer 7" de material nuevo de la banda en mas de 20 años, "Be Nice", es original de "The Nomads" y aparecía en el Vol. 4 del recopilatorio "Back from the Grave" y "On the Run" representa la primera composición original de Collins y Kroha que aunque apareció en una recopilación en "streaming" hace tiempo, ve ahora su primera edición física solo disponible en la gira, podéis oír un trozo de su primer tema aquí:
-¿Cual es la mejor banda con la que habéis tocado? ¿La que mas os haya sorprendido?
Una vez tocamos en un festival en Portland, Oregon... y los Thee oh Sees abrían para nosotros! Yo estaba sudando tinta esperando en el "backstage"! Son una banda realmente dura para salir detrás!!!
-En España tocareis en tres bolos, San Sebastian, Madrid y Sevilla, en todos os acompañaran grandes bandas ¿Conocéis algo del panorama español actual, alguna banda en particular?
He visto a "Wau y los Arrrghs" son buenos y también a "The Limboos", son muy buenos.
-En el bolo de Sevilla, tierra del Flamenco pero también del buen blues y el garaje, vuestro ultimo bolo de la gira, tocareis con tres bandas que llevan flipando con vuestra visión del garage, R&b, R&R sin bajo y sin florituras desde vuestro primer LP con Crypt, y entre ellas “Charm Bag”, apasionados con vuestro sonido y que hacen temas como el “Do The Gories”. Están deseando que lleguéis a una ciudad que es famosa por muchas cosas que no tienen nada que ver con la música underground, ¿Qué creéis que esperan de vuestro ultimo show en España? Algunos ya nos han dicho que ya que cerráis gira aquí podéis quedaros unos días... os aseguro que diversión y buen rollo no os va a faltar!

-No sabemos con exactitud cuantas veces habéis estado en España, pero ¿Qué preferís la tortilla española” o la paella?
Esta todo bueno, amigo! A mi me gusta los antiguos bares de tapas, esos que no han cambiado en 80 años.
-¿Hay algo que os de miedo ahora en el escenario que no os daba antes, o al contrario? ¿Estáis mas nerviosos ahora? Resistirán los "amplis" de hoy vuestras embestidas sonoras de siempre, esperamos que sigan siendo tan arrolladoras...
Nada nos asusta encima de un escenario. Llevaremos nuestras viejas Fenders gemelas, muy buenos "amplis" y tengo plena confianza en que van a aguantar nuestras embestidas.
-Dan, esta sólo para ti, tus últimos proyectos con el folk-blues mas ancestral, por desgracia aun no son muy conocidos en nuestro país, pero nosotros si hemos dedicado a tiempo a escuchar tu “Give Me No Trouble In The World I know” dentro de las “Folk Blues Night Series” y nos parece una preciosidad de disco... Y tenemos muchas ganas de echarle el guante a tu “Angels Wathching Over Me” donde empleas todo tipo de instrumentación típicamente folk americana... ¿Te reinventas o siempre has tenido afición por esta música? ¿Qué vamos a encontrar en estos discos?
Siempre he sido un gran fan de Dr. Ross y John Lee Hooker, dos "bluesman" que grabaron en los '50, pero que tocaban sus guitarras en afinación abierta en un estilo antiguo de "Country Blues". Siempre he querido aprender a tocar de ese modo. Si, me estoy reinventado a mi mismo en cierto modo, pero creo que conforme pasa el tiempo mis gustos están cambiando de un modo natural. Estoy escuchando mucha música acústica antigua y me gusta el desafió de tocar instrumentos acústicos y estoy apasionado con ello. También me gusta mucho mezclar las tradiciones blancas y negras del "folk/country" y eso mezcla es los que vais a poder oír en mi nuevo disco.
-Y esto es todo, nuestro mas sincero agradecimiento por tu amabilidad, y estad seguros que todo el mundo os va a recibir con los brazos abiertos, muchas ganas de teneros por aquí, nos entregaremos en cuerpo y alma y estamos ansiosos porque llegue ese momento.

I Know You Fine, But How You Doin'-1990 New Rose-1994 Crypt
The Gories, the legendary Detroit-born line-up that shocked the world in the late eighties, comes back to Europe where the news has had an enormously significant impact. The band which Jack White labelled "The best garage band in America since the '60s" and testified that “they made people with Les Pauls and Marshall amps look like idiots" returns to take command of their two Old Fenders Twins and stripped down, bare-bones drum kit to prove to those who are on this side of the pond that Dan, Mick and Peg are the fucking masters of this business, that they create timeless music, and that it is never too late to rocknroll – they are an inspiration to the best of the best.
The tour started last Friday in Haarlem (NL) and will end on June 6th in Spain, where they finish with three dates. We know they are already closing dates for UK and Northern Europe at the end of July, but for the momet, we´ll remind you of the the Spanish dates with their supporting bands and venues:

Outta Here - 1992 Crypt Records
-We don't know if you have an idea of the stir that you have created here with your European tour. It has been a shock in Spain where a lot of loyal fans have going nuts knowing you were going to play again ... Did you really want to do it, or was it just for the money, as so many bands are doing nowadays?
You’re right, I have no idea we created such a stir! We like touring Europe. We like being there and visiting different cities and I think the hospitality is better than in the U.S. Peg wanted to tour this summer, Mick and I were available, so we got it together. The band makes money, so that’s nice, but we don’t only do it for the money.
-In an interview, long time ago, Mick was asked what "The Gories" had done to become so attractive to people. He answered, "They never forget that they saw us", are you still attracting fans in the same way? Your last official album was "The Shaw Tapes," released in 2013 by Thirdman Records , but then there is the 1988 recording, as well as a previous one from 1992 ... Why people are still so excited about you?
We put on the best show we can, and put our hearts and souls into it. I think people are still excited about us because our music is timeless, and people continue to discover it.
-Do you have a close relationship? Evil tongues say that you are not getting on well as we might think?
"Evil Tongues"? Is that another band talking shit about us? We’ll kick their asses!
-A girl on drums, two guitars with no bass... Today we can see all these things, but at your beginnings was not so common. Do you consider yourselves pioneers? Was your influence on many later bands so important due to this revolution at that time? How many times were you asked why you were you playing with no bass? And regarding the concerts, how many people were going see you in Detroit?
Yes, that was unusual when we started, and yes, I think we were pioneers, but the Velvet Underground was a big inspiration to us, so they were our pioneers. We were asked a lot of times why did we not have a bass, or people would offer to play bass for us. We liked it how it was. We didn’t want to change. There would be maybe 20 people who came to see us. We played around Detroit from ‘86 until ‘91, it was a long time for us. By ‘91, there started to be a buzz about us, and maybe 75 people would come to see us. That was a big deal to us, but we were burned out by that time.
-Comparisons are certainly odious, but surely all this made you were compared with bands like "The Cramps"... Terrific or Fucking?...
We were compared to The Cramps, which was fine. Not a problem. We liked them, but we weren’t huge fans. I liked John Lee Hooker and The Velvet Underground much more than The Cramps.
-And after this tour, have you thought something about your future together? we know about Mick and "The Dirtbombs", and his new "Wolfmanhattan Project"… and you are with "Danny and the Darleans" and we can see you are highly involved in new "Folk-Blues " projects, unfortunately we have no news from Peg... there will be new material from "The Gories" or we have to wait for a new reunion?
We all live in different cities now. Mick in Brooklyn, Peg in New Orleans, me in Detroit. If we could all hang out together like we used to, maybe a new LP would come out of it. I feel like if we tried to make a new LP it would be just that, “trying”. I would like one to come naturally and organically, but I don’t see that happening. Having said that, Thirdman Records is putting out a single of recordings we made in 2013, and we’ll have that for sale on this tour.
-“Be Nice” / “On The Run”- is the first 7” of new material in over twenty years. “Be Nice” is originally by The Nomads, featured on “Back From the Grave” Vol. 4 compilation, “On the Run” is the first original Collins/Kroha composition in forever and while appearing on a streaming-only compilation a few years back its first psysical release now, you can listen a clip from “Be Nice” here:
-Which is the best band you have ever played with, the most astonishing one?
We played a festival in Portland, Oregon one time, and Thee Oh Sees were our support! I was sweating bullets waiting back stage! They are a tough act to follow!!!
-In Spain you are going to play in three venues, San Sebastian, Madrid and Seville, in all them you are going to be accompanied by great bands, do you You know something about the actual Spanish scene, any band in particular?
I’ve seen "Wau y los Arrrghs", they were good, also "The Limboos" are very good.
-In Seville, in the land of Flamenco but also good blues and garage, your last gig of the tour, you are going to play with three bands that are hallucinating with your vision of the garage, R & B, R & R, with no bass and no frills, from your first LP with Crypt, among them, “Charm Bag” passionate about your sound and covering songs like "Do The Gories" are looking forward your arrival to a city that is famous for many other attractions nothing to do with underground music, what do you think they hope for your last show? Some of them have already told us you must stay here a few resting days... Be sure, fun and good vibes are guaranteed!

-We don't know exactly how many times you have been in Spain... what do you prefer "Tortilla Española" or "Paella"?
It’s all good, baby! I like the old tapas places that haven’t changed in 80 years.
Is there anything that scare you now on the stage? Do your feel similar sensations nowdays? Do you think the amps are going to be able to resist the onslaughts of your guitars?
Nothing scares us onstage. We will have good old Fender Twins. Very durable amps. I am confident they will withstand our onslaught.
Dan, this one is just for you, your latest projects with traditional folk-blues, unfortunately are still not well known in our country, but we have dedicated a good time to listen to your “Give Me No Trouble In The World I know” within "Folk Blues Night Series" and really it's a fantastic album... And we are keen to get our hands on your last one “Angels Wathching Over Me” where you use all kind of Americana folk instruments... are you reinventing yourself or you've always had this passion for this music, what are we going to find in these records?
I’ve always been a big fan of Dr. Ross and John Lee Hooker, two bluesman who recorded in the 1950s, but played guitars in open tunings in an older country blues style. I always wanted to learn how to play like that. I’m re-inventing myself somewhat, but I think as I get older, my tastes naturally change. I’m listening to old time acoustic music more and I like the challenge of playing acoustic instruments, and still getting a passionate feeling across. I also really like mixing up black and white folk/country traditions, so you will hear a mixture of that on my record.
